Sports MedicineSports medicine focuses on the common injuries and conditions affecting the active and athlete alike. Professional athletes are not the only ones likely to suffer from a common sports injury or condition. These frequently occur among those active in hobbies and weekend sports as well. Treatment of sports medicine injuries and conditions may differ from those used on less active or older patients, because it is assumed that the same activities or sport prompting the injury or condition will quickly be resumed upon recovery. Therefore, treatment must work to not only treat the injury but also strengthen the limb and supporting muscle groups in order to avoid a recurrence. Among the most common sports injuries and conditions include sprains, fractures and dislocations, contusions, ligament and tendon damage, and cartilage tears. Too often an initial injury with subsiding pain may actually be a slight fracture, which if not diagnosed and corrected early on could result in an unstable joint environment and the early onset of osteoarthritis. The same is true for unaddressed ligament, tendon and cartilage damage. Diagnostic testing and proper imaging can identify the slightest damage and prompt a treatment plan to promote healing and deter joint degeneration. |
